Check out Another Expert’s View on Overnight Camp

Miss Tex just began reading Homesick and Happy, a book published by Michael Thompson this month. Read below to learn more about this great piece of work and what it advises parents to do. We couldn’t agree more here at Camp Hantesa!

Homesick and Happy- How Time Away from Parents Can Help a Child Grow

By Michael Thompson, Ph.D.

An insightful and powerful look at the magic of summer camp—and why it is so important for children to be away from home . . . if only for a little while.

In an age when it’s the rare child who walks to school on his own, the thought of sending your “little ones” off to sleep-away camp can be overwhelming—for you and for them. But a parent’s first instinct—to shelter their offspring above all else—actually deprives children of the major developmental milestones that occur through letting them go—and watching them come back transformed.

In Homesick and Happy, Dr. Thompson shares a strong argument for, and a vital guide to, this brief loosening of ties. A great champion of summer camp, he explains how camp ushers your children into a thrilling environment—an electronics-free zone, a multigenerational community, meaningful daily rituals like group meals and cabin clean-up, and a place where time simply slows down. In the buggy woods, icy swims, campfire sing-alongs, and daring adventures, children have emotionally significant and character-building experiences. They often grow in ways that surprise even themselves.

They make lifelong memories and cherished friends. Dr. Thompson shows how children who are away from their parents can be both homesick and happy, scared and successful, anxious and exuberant. When children go to camp—for a week, a month, or the whole summer—they can experience some of the greatest maturation of their lives, and return more independent, strong, and healthy.

Dad and Me Weekend

The rain held off this weekend, and we had a great time at camp with our Dad and Me camp program. The seven families enjoyed a night hike with a frog hunt, archery, leather crafting, noodle hockey, bouldering, and of course a couple of camp fires! We look forward to seeing families at our family camp on May 11-12th and during our new family resident camp program July 5-7th!

The Good Fairy Eagerly Awaits Your Return to Magic Hill!

On warm summer nights, resident campers hike up Magic Hill at dusk. We may read stories, sing songs, and take a deep breath as we look out over Hantesa, our second home. At Magic Hill, we also meet the Good Fairy, the ever-present fairy who watches over all of us here at Hantesa and works to make wishes come true.

As we each sit with a candle in front of us, and the sun sets, we make a wish to the Good Fairy and celebrate the beginning of a new week at camp.

The Good Fairy stands in front of a fire sprinkled with fairy dust.

The Good Fairy is waiting, with her arms outstretched and her skirt billowing in the wind, to welcome you back to Camp Hantesa this summer. Register soon for the best summer yet!

Message of the Good Fairy
I spring from the spray on the tip of the crest
Of the billows from out of the blue,
I am bringing a message that says you are blest
By the love that your friends bear for you.
If my arms were as long as the wings of the wind
And I’d stretch them wide away,
I never could hold all the blessings I’m told
Your friends are wishing today.
As long as I stand with this smile on my face
And my arms outstretched so high,
If you’ll think of the friend that sent me to you,
You can never be blue if you try.

Day Camp or Resident Camp?

Do you find yourself debating over whether to send your child to day camp or resident camp? Are you afraid that overnight camp may just be too much for your little one? Perhaps day camp is easier. After all, your child gets to come home every afternoon, just like he/she does during the school year… Well, we ask you to challenge this thought.

One article may help you make your decision.

Winter Resident Camp is the Best!

Winter Overnight Camp

Many Hantesa campers joined in on our winter resident camp. These girls and boys had the ultimate camp experience as they spent 4 days and 3 nights at Hantesa. Swimming, bowling, hiking, and crafting rounded out their experience. It was a great 4 days with these campers. We can’t wait to see them back at Hantesa for our Summer Resident Camps!

On Friday evening, we headed to the bowling alley for strikes, pizza, and lots of giggles!

We made foil packs during a camp fire cookout. However, since the weather was so blustery, we cooked our foil packs inside over the fire.

We learned how to do copper enameling!

Copper ready to go into the kiln for the enameling process.

One of our campers turned 12 during resident camp. Happy Birthday!!!
